I'd like some help with game theme ideas. Namely I'm looking for about 20 of the biggest, baddest monsters or villains from mythology and the public domain. Any supernatural danger that an elite cadre of monster hunters would go up against.

What are your favorites?

I'll probably mess up the spelling on this, but it has to be said

Paul Bunyan and his hellspawn blue steed, and his razor sharp life-destroying axe –whole nations brought to their knees by his effortless powerswings and careless footsteps, and whole forests knocked down and consumed in the fires of his industry. Also I think he made gigantic pancakes once.

Scilla and Charibdis were pretty badass, but kind of impractical to find and fight.

Pirate ghosts?

THE Minotaur.

Chupacabra, though I don't know what it looks like.

Nixon.

Rumpelstiltskin, who was easily defeated.

Medusa -badass not only while living, but also how her head was used postmortem

Cyclops was kind of weak and generic, but still big.

There's some native-american all consuming dark creature whose name I forget, but was always creepy to me.

Also Quetzalcoatl the feather serpent is cool, and also cool how it manifested itself as Cortez and brought about Aztec apocalypse.

I like the idea of Death.

Greek Gods, a concept interesting to me is not that they are actively trying destroy humans, but how humans are just pawns in their games. So the challenge is not defeating them, but escaping their control over your life.

from Greek mythology (in order of interest):
Circe (a particular strain of sorceress)
Sirens
Harpies
Hydra
Scylla and Charybdis
Lamia
[and I agree with Jason about the Greek gods]

already mentioned, but I'd like to second (in order of interest):
Medusa/gorgons
the Minotaur
Polyphemus/cyclops

others (in random order):
basilisks
naga
named demons (or perhaps different types of demons)
named angels, perhaps, depending on your plot
kraken/leviathan
the midgard serpent
fenrir/fenris wolf
grendel
rakshasa/i (eg, Ravana)

random Chinese things that might be interesting:
the supernaturals in Chinese Ghost Story
jiang shi (Chinese hopping vampires)
the Chinese demons mentioned here (Chiyou, Gonggong, and Xiangliu)
xing tian
bai gu jing
hulijing (fox demons -- most famous probably Daji)
pipa jing
wang yanluo (king of hell)
