chess is really old
like not geologic but in terms of

I met a couple of random geeks today, had a beer, talked about playing D&D. They seemed like nice guys. Let's hope it pans out.

In that vein I have been enjoying my board game group. Last night I played Small World, which I recently picked up, and had a good time. It seems pretty fun and smooth. I also played El Grande for the first time, and two games of Race for the Galaxy, which, if I haven't mentioned it is really, really fun.  I won all four games, which is pretty bad-ass.

Surprisingly little to say about Laura being pregnant. Especially over the internet. It should suffice to say that I am excited, and only a little scared.

I'm currently working on a solitaire/cooperative card game, maybe about dragon slayers, still some X-Com ruminations, the over-used adventurers vying for loot theme, and I'm interested inthe idea of piecepack game systems and the like for abstract game design, though invariably the ones I find don't interest me, and I think that says something I should be listening to about esperanto game systems in general.

Forgive my ignorance, but I keep wondering, do you work? Or is your game development work?

It's cool that you got to play Small World.
How was it?

Congratulations dude.

It's pretty fun, sort of chaotic and confrontational. I got a good combination (heroic sorcerers, emphasis on the sorcerers, who have an incredibly useful power) which led to some big turns, and people thought I was way ahead. But I really only won by like 10 points (as an example the final scores ranged from around 65-90) so I think the other players could have cut me down a notch if they'd been a bit more determined.

It's hard to describe how it plays without calling it "like risk" or something, because it doesn't really feel like that. Perhaps if you say it's like Risk but you get most or all of your armies at the beginning (only a few races can get more units over time - see aforementioned sorcerers) and gradually over-extend yourself, until you put that race into decline and pick a new one.

A big part of the game is picking the best available race and power combination. Points pile up on unattractive combinations as the game goes on, making them more attractive, and the trick is to pick the one that will net you the most points overall before going into decline (or occasionally, the one which will hurt your opponents the most). There's not too much luck, but at the end of your turn everyone gets to roll the reinforcement die, which lets you win an extra territory if you're lucky, which adds a nice level of uncertainty.

Thanks.
